CONTROLS / ONLINE CO-OP

Set up the controls, then make the lobby boring.

How to Fish is built for online co-op, but a clean lobby diagnosis needs more than repeating “try again.” Check the official settings and relay state first, then separate a join failure from an input or weapon-selection problem.

Quick setup:

Open the in-game Controls/settings panel, verify the active input device, choose the intended difficulty, and have the host create a fresh private session. In v1.0.9, check the Steam connection debug text in the main menu; if relay text is red, the official note points players toward the Community Discord’s common-bugs channel.

Settings confirmed by the patch history

Setting / featureCurrent evidenceWhat to do
Difficultyv1.0.9 adds a selector in the main menu and in-game. Default keeps the prior balance; Easy is 25% less creature health and 50% less damage; Hard is 25% more health and 25% more damage.Record the selected mode before comparing a boss attempt.
Steam connection debugv1.0.9 adds a main-menu readout; red Steam relay text is a connection warning, not proof that the game or save is broken.Capture the readout and test a fresh session.
Private lobby / session typev1.0.5 added private invite-only lobbies and a session type setting.Use private mode to reduce strangers and session variables.
Controller glyphsv1.0.8 says PlayStation controller glyphs should display correctly. If glyphs are wrong, record device, connection method and version before changing bindings.
Invert X/Yv1.0.5 added invert X and Y axis settings.Set these before testing aim or trick-shot instructions.

Exact keybinds: keep the unknowns visible

The public evidence set confirms that a Controls panel and controller support exist, but it does not provide a reliable, platform-complete keybind table for the current build. Use the game’s own Controls panel as the authority and do not copy a PC-only table into a controller answer.

Safe co-op test order

  1. Match versions. Update Steam on every machine and record the exact version.
  2. Start a fresh private lobby. Use the host’s invite path and avoid reusing a long-lived session during diagnosis.
  3. Join early. Test immediately after the host creates the session, then note whether solo play still works.
  4. Read Steam relay status. A red relay message is evidence of a connection problem to report, not a universal fix for black screens.
  5. Test one variable. Change session type, join method or controller connection one at a time.
  6. Protect the save. If weapons vanish or equipping crashes, stop experimenting with the only save and use the save-safety checklist.
