Quick answer: note which sound repeats and what happened immediately before it. Leave the current session normally, restart the game, confirm the same output device, and retest in a fresh session. If the problem only follows one lobby or one action, preserve that reproduction instead of overwriting a save.
Classify the audio problem
| Pattern | Useful clue | Record |
|---|---|---|
| One effect repeats | A shot, reel, pickup, or boss sound continues after the action. | Action, location, weapon or creature, and whether another player caused it. |
| All audio doubles | Music, ambience, and effects sound layered after a load or device change. | Output device, headset or speakers, volume mixer state, and restart result. |
| Co-op only | The host or one guest hears the duplicate while others do not. | Host/guest role, player count, join order, and whether a fresh lobby changes it. |
| After alt-tab or overlay | The issue begins after focus changes or capture software opens. | Overlay name, focus change, display mode, and exact repeat steps. |
Low-risk test order
- Stop the noisy session. Do not continue a long boss run while trying to diagnose an audio loop.
- Use a normal exit. In the current save boundary, Manual Save, Main Menu, and Quit are the intentional save actions; a crash is not.
- Restart with one output device. Disconnecting an unused headset or virtual audio route can tell you whether the issue follows the device.
- Test a fresh session. Compare solo and co-op, then compare host and guest if the issue is multiplayer-only.
- Disable one overlay temporarily. Test capture, chat, and driver overlays separately rather than changing every setting at once.
- Report the sequence. Include the build, sound device, session type, action, and whether the loop survives a full restart.
What not to assume
- A duplicated sound does not prove that the save is corrupted.
- Changing graphics settings will not automatically solve an audio-only issue.
- A fix that works after a restart may be a session reset, not a permanent game fix.
- Do not download an unofficial config or delete save files before preserving the reproduction.
Evidence boundary: current community discussion signals establish that audio and performance complaints exist, but they do not establish one developer-confirmed sound duplication fix. This page is a diagnostic checklist until a repeatable current-version fix is verified.
