ENDGAME / FINAL HANDOFF

How to beat the final boss and finish the route

The late-game encounter is commonly described as the Whale or lava-whale sequence, with public guides also using Mutated Bowhead terminology. Prepare for a long arena, keep the Whale Fin, and verify the return handoff before calling the run complete.

Short answer:

Reach the volcanic/Purple-island endgame through the preceding handoffs, enter with a weapon you can control while moving, survive the Whale sequence without selling or dropping the Whale Fin, then return it to the requesting NPC. The ending is a handoff state, not simply the moment the health bar disappears.

1. Confirm the endgame route

  1. Finish the Red-island delivery. The route cross-checks place the Tuna request and the volcanic transition before the final island sequence.
  2. Read the final-island marker. Use the boat radar for coordinates and the NPC dialogue for progression state. If the final path is not visible, check the full island route before assuming the save is broken.
  3. Make a dedicated endgame save. Patch 1.0.9 says save corruption was hopefully fixed, but the official note still directs players with loading or weapon-equipping crashes to the Community Discord for removal steps. Do not overwrite your only usable save while testing.

2. Prepare for the arena

  • Choose control and uptime over a theoretical damage ranking. The exact best weapon, attachment, prices and ammunition economy are not verified in the current evidence set.
  • Carry recovery items and leave enough room to keep the boss drop. The Whale Fin is a route item until the return handoff is confirmed.
  • In co-op, assign one player to movement/space and one to damage, and record host/join status if a relay issue appears. v1.0.9 exposes Steam connection debug in the main menu.
Difficulty matters: v1.0.9 officially adds Easy and Hard. Easy reduces creature health by 25% and damage by 50%; Hard increases health by 25% and damage by 25%. Record the setting when comparing old guides or speedrun claims.

3. Fight the Whale

  1. Keep the camera and escape lane clear. Do not let scenery or the edge of the arena force you into a blind retreat.
  2. Damage during readable openings. Public guides agree on movement discipline and staged pressure, but the precise attack cycle is not stable enough to publish as a guaranteed script.
  3. Reset rather than greed. A missed burst is cheaper than losing the line needed to dodge the next attack. In co-op, call out when the Whale changes direction or a player needs space.
  4. Confirm the kill state. Wait for the reward/quest state to settle before leaving. If the fin is not in the expected inventory or the next dialogue does not appear, stop and record the exact sequence.

4. Return the Whale Fin and trigger the ending

Bring the Whale Fin back to the NPC indicated by the late-game route. If the ending does not trigger, check these in order:

  1. Confirm the creature was fully defeated and the reward was collected.
  2. Check inventory, quest dialogue and the current island before reloading.
  3. Load the last usable save if the reward or handoff vanished.
  4. Use the lost-items/save checklist and keep the report marked needs-verification if the result differs after a clean replay.
